This module, based on Chapter 13 from ACI 212.3R-16, “Report on Chemical Admixtures for Concrete,” addresses the use of corrosion-inhibiting admixtures to help mitigate steel corrosion in concrete. This chapter provides information about how the three common types of corrosion-inhibiting admixtures – amine carboxylate, amine-ester organic emulsion, and calcium nitrite – work to slow the rate of corrosion of embedded steel.

Table of Contents:
  • Explain the advantages of using corrosion-inhibiting admixtures in reinforced concrete exposed to corrosive chloride environments.
  • Describe how the three common corrosion-inhibiting admixtures work to reduce the rate of corrosion.
  • List some applications where each of the three corrosion-inhibiting admixtures would be better suited in different chloride exposure applications.
  • Explain some other effects that each of these three corrosion-inhibiting admixtures have on freshly placed concrete and hardened concrete properties.
